Market Spotlight - Johannesburg, South Africa
October 14 2026 by Hayley Levine
The city earns the title. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange is the largest in Africa, and the Sandton district anchors more corporate headquarters than anywhere else on the continent. Standard Bank, Africa's largest lender by assets, runs its operations from Johannesburg. Mining and industrial names built their fortunes here too. Anglo American was founded in Johannesburg in 1917, drawn by direct access to the Witwatersrand Basin, and Sasol runs its business from Sandton today. Shoprite, Africa's largest grocer and South Africa's largest retailer by market capitalization, trades on the JSE alongside them.
Johannesburg anchors the most developed data center market on the continent. South Africa holds close to 41% of Africa's data center market, and Johannesburg is the country's dominant hub within it. That concentration makes the city the natural place for a global network to build its African presence. Mobile operators MTN Group and Vodacom base their headquarters here, along with infrastructure companies Teraco and Datatec.
Cogent has operated in Johannesburg since 2020, lighting six carrier-neutral data centers in that time. In May 2026, Cogent went live at Digital Parks Africa's Samrand facility, giving South African customers direct access to a global IP backbone from inside the building. Cogent also runs multiple routes out of Johannesburg, one to London and another to Paris, connecting the market to major hubs in Europe and the networks beyond them.
For businesses in Johannesburg, that means a direct path from Africa's financial capital to the rest of the world.
